Fatigue management in a high-risk environment

Presentation by: Jane Skillen, OHS Advisor, Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine

CSG event video now available (members only)
Presentation package now available (members only)

Fatigue in the workplace can be a critical safety and psychosocial risk. However, some contributing factors are often overlooked, resulting in poor management of the issue.

Jane Skillen, OHS Advisor at Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, presented an informative case study to Central Safety Group on 11 November on managing fatigue for clinical forensic nurses in regional Victoria.

She discussed the implications of being impaired by fatigue in such a high-risk work environment, and the importance of recognising both external and workplace factors that can contribute to it.

Her talk outlined strategies to identify fatigue-related concerns early, and what a timely intervention looks like.

The presenter:

Jane Skillen has over 20 years’ experience across the Victorian Public Service and specialised sectors including healthcare, education, corrections, and the arts. She has been in her current role of OHS Advisor with the Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine (VIFM) for two and a half years. VIFM provides the justice system with crucial evidence that underpins safe convictions and appropriate acquittals. Her previous career includes providing expert OHS leadership to organisations such as Youth Justice, Corrections Victoria, the Department of Health & Human Services and Victoria Police. Jane is a Financial Member of Central Safety Group.

Designing good work

What if work wasn’t the problem but the solution to wellbeing? That is the premise of the fascinating book 'Good Work – Transform Your Work from the Inside Out', released earlier this year by organisational psychologist and leadership partner Dr Kat Page.

Central Safety Group offers you the opportunity to hear from Kat at our monthly event on Tuesday 10 November, where she will challenge the idea that work is inherently harmful.
Drawing on science, stories, and practical tools, Kat's book shows how leaders and teams can design work that’s both human and high-performing. This is based on a new framework for change: Me, We, Us.

Me – How do I redesign my own relationship with work so it fuels rather than depletes me?
We – How do we create teams that energise and protect each other?
Us – How do we build organisations and societies where good work is the norm, not the exception?

Good Work is both a guide and a call to collective action. It’s written for leaders, change-makers, and anyone ready to change work for good – for themselves and for others.
Kat's book has been highly recommended by CSG members, including Kevin Jones. Don't miss your chance to meet Kat and join what is bound to be a very stimulating discussion.
