Climate change as an OHS issue

Presentation by: Sam Hall, Researcher & PhD Candidate, La Trobe University

CSG event video now available (members only)
Presentation package now available (members only)

The impact of climate change on worker health and safety, and the response by OHS professionals, was discussed by Sam Hall in a lunchtime presentation to Central Safety Group on Tuesday 9 June.

Sam is doing PhD research into how climate change is creating new and emerging risks for worker health, safety and wellbeing. She is also exploring how occupational health professionals in Australia perceive these impacts of climate change, as well the role they can play in workplace climate adaptation.

Sam presented preliminary findings on the perceptions of climate-related risks at work. She also discussed how workplaces may respond proactively to climate change as an OHS and work design issue.

The talk was followed by audience questions and discussion.

Our members always appreciate hearing about new research, especially as it stimulates new thinking and inspires innovation in OHS management.

The presenter:

Sam Hall is a qualified physiotherapist and ergonomist with 20 years’ experience across occupational health and safety, rehabilitation, wellbeing, coaching, and education. She is currently a graduate researcher completing a PhD at La Trobe University’s Climate Change Adaptation Lab, investigating the climate change impacts on health at work. Sam holds a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and a Masters of Health Science (Ergonomics) from the University of Queensland, and a Masters of Health Science (OHS) from Queensland Institute of Technology.

Site Visit -The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) – Australia’s first hospital-based medical discovery centre –officially opened its doors in June this year, marking the culmination of more than two decades of planning, collaboration and investment in Australia’s biomedical engineering future.
Central Safety Group is privileged to have the opportunity to visit this brand new centre on Tuesday 8th September. Located on the corner of Victoria Parade and Nicholson St, Fitzroy, the ACMD is a $206 million state-of-the-art biomedical engineering centre. Our tour will include a look at cutting-edge laboratories, a human kinetics lab, a clinical simulation lab, and dedicated education facilities to train the next generation of clinical, nursing, allied health and biomedical research leaders.
The ACMD’s unique collaborative model – placing researchers, engineers, clinicians and industry partners under one roof for the first time – is designed to deliver ground-breaking technologies that improve patient outcomes, enhance health equity and transform Australia’s health system.
