Victorian Tunnelling Centre

CSG members enjoyed a wonderful tour to the Victorian Tunnelling Centre (VTC) at Holmesglen Institute’s Drummond Street campus in Chadstone on June 14th. Not only is it a fascinating facility to visit, but the fact that it was our first site visit in a number of years made it extra special.

The tour was well organised and our guides Gaz, Maddie & Ryan gave us plenty of time at each “stop” to look and ask questions. In fact, the tour lasted for an hour and a half instead of the allocated hour -such was the generosity of our guides and the high level of interest from the attendees.

There were many highlights. One for me was the emphasis on safety in all aspects of the training course, from the refuge chamber to the selection and use of PPE.  Another was their commitment to buying locally where an equivalent was available. Other attendees made particular mention of the use of AI: they were fascinated by the simulator as well as how virtual reality is employed in other ways; for example, for inductions and fire extinguisher training. The interactivity makes these training modules so much more meaningful.

All-in-all, the visit was a huge success and we look forward to other visits in the future.
